Five small things that get invoices paid sooner

Most late payments are not refusals. They are invoices that were hard to act on.

Most invoices that arrive late were never disputed. They sat in an inbox because paying them took more than one step. Each of the fixes below removes a step.

#Put one total where the eye lands

The amount due and the date it is due belong at the top, in the largest type on the page. Everything else is detail for whoever reconciles the books later.

#Let people pay from the invoice

A pay button on the invoice itself beats bank details copied into a banking app. Keep the bank details too: some clients must pay by transfer.

  • Card and bank transfer on every invoice
  • The reference filled in for them
  • A receipt sent the moment it lands

#Remind politely, and only twice

One reminder three days before the due date, one a week after. More than that turns a client relationship into a collections process.

A reminder that arrives before the due date reads as service. One that arrives after reads as chasing.
