Design and engineering studio · Dhaka and Istanbul
We design buildings, and the ways through them.
Mimar is a design and engineering studio for places people learn, gather and stay: restoration, wayfinding, interiors and daylight.
What we do
Four kinds of work, often in the same building.
- 01 Restoration Old buildings put back into use: surveyed, repaired with materials that suit them, and fitted for how people use them now.
- 02 Wayfinding Signs, maps and numbering that let people find their way the first time, in every language they read.
- 03 Interiors Rooms for learning, staying and gathering, fitted carefully into the buildings around them.
- 04 Engineering Structure, daylight and passive cooling worked out early, so the building does the work before machines have to.
Selected work
All projectsBringing a hilltop observatory back into use: stabilized walls, a new instrument hall and a roof that opens again.
A wayfinding system for a library that grew room by room for centuries: signs, maps and reading-room numbering in Arabic and French.
Turning a caravanserai into a forty-room hotel without losing the courtyard that made it one.
Re-lighting a college lecture hall with daylight: screens that cut glare and bring light deeper into the room.
How we work
One drawing, four steps
- 01 Listen We walk the building with the people who use it, before drawing a line.
- 02 Survey Measured, photographed and understood: what is there, and what is hidden.
- 03 Design A few clear options, priced honestly, then one carried through in detail.
- 04 Build On site every week until the keys are handed over, and after.
- Measured survey
- Lime conservation
- Adaptive reuse
- Bilingual signage
- Daylight modeling
- Passive cooling
- Joinery design
- Heritage consent
- Site supervision
